Photoshop: Dramatic Lighting

For the record, I went through this tutorial three times with my selected image.  I maintain that the image should have been great for some dramatic lighting, but I still failed to get good results following his techniques.  Eventually, I just ignored pretty much everything after his instructions to ‘blur a lens flare’.  That left me with a basic image I could work with, without all the extras he added that pretty much made my image look like someone exploded a bag of flour all over the place.  My conclusion is that what he did works great for the image he has, but doesn’t necessarily extrapolate well to other projects.  The tutorial?

For stock, I used 5181 by rockstocks .  My results?

Seriously disappointing.  So self-respecting monster would lurk in such a corridor.  I will try again with a different technique.
